A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
